Carpe Diem

Daily writing prompt
Do you have a quote you live your life by or think of often?

Carpe Diem.

Thinking of an answer for this quote, my mind spread across all the many quotes I’ve known. Many of them from The Picture Of Dorian Gray (because that’s like my recent favorite read and it is just so beautifully written and has so many quotes). However this particular quote struck to me the most.

“Carpe Diem” is a Latin phrase literally translating to “Pluck the day”, although is most widely meant to be used as “Seize the day”.

This is one of those phrases that you just happen to know. But, it wasn’t until this quote was so passionately(?) mentioned and put to use in Dead Poet’s Society that I understood it’s essence. And I must say that through this semester, I have indeed used this much.

The movie makes brilliant use of the quote;
From beginning with:
“Gather ye Rose-buds while ye may,
    Old Time is still a-flying:
And this same flower that smiles to day,
    To morrow will be dying…”

to the concept of:
“Cause we are foods for worm lads. Because believe or not one day each and every one of us in this room is gonna stop breathing, turn cold and die”
and:
“Carpe Diem. Seize the day, boys. Make your lives extraordinary”

Through this, it urges not only the characters of the movie, but also inspires the viewers to not wait until you are “fertilizing daffodils” in Mr. Keating’s own words and seize the day.

This quote has helped me through my overthinking and anxiety at times of “Should I or Should I not?” in school, and I hope it continues to.

Whatever happens tomorrow is still a mystery, but what we do have is today. We can’t do differently what we did yesterday, so let’s just live this moment the best!

Let’s Seize The Day!

CARPE DIEM!

Ok Bye!
Until Next time!

  1. Carpe Diem! There’s something about it that makes it hearing from Prof. Keatings very inspirational. Personally, my favourite is the Carpe Diem. Seize the day, boys! Make your lives extraordinary. As to when it comes to quotes, there’s always Dumbledore saying to Harry: “Happiness can be found even in the darkest of times, when only one remembers to turn on the light” or “Do not pity the dead, Harry. Pity the living. And above all, pity those who live without love.”

    1. Yes, Dumbledore quotes are also one of my favorites. And it’s quite amazing, that we often hear these quotes in the voice of the actors who played them, it feels very similar to returning home! Thanks for sharing Devangi! :)<3<3
